Sterilization effect of 254 nm UV-C irradiation against cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa

چکیده
Harmful algal bloom (HAB) produced by several cyanobacterial species is a significant threat to many aquatic ecosystems around the world. Recently frequent occurrence of serious algal bloom in Lake Taihu, Lake Dianchi and Lake Chaohu has become a serious concern in China. Although various methods are currently being used to control toxic blue-green algal water blooms, many of their techniques are of limited use. In this study, the use of 254 nm UV-C radiation to control algal growth was evaluated using Microcystis aeruginosa as test species. The UV-C irradiation of more than 99 μW cm light intensity was found to be lethal to M. aeruginosa. Under incubated conditions with petri dishes and with 20 hours exposure to the UV-C irradiation of 1370 μW cm, almost all the cells settled to the bottom of the incubation Petri dishes, whereas all the unirradiated cells remained in suspension. It was also observed by microstructure and ultrastructure slice-ups that the UV-C radiation had a significant kill and wound effect on algal cells and controlled algal growth. After a UV-C dose of no less than 7.2 J cm, most algae cells dispersed, whereas all the unirradiated cells remained agglomerative.

Photoprotective Role of Epidermal Melanin Granules against Ultraviolet Damage and DMA Repair in Guinea Pig Skin1
We previously developed a quantitative autoradiographic tech nique with special forceps for measuring unscheduled DNA synthesis (UDS) in mouse skin after treatment with ultraviolet light in vivo. By this method, we investigated the relationship between the protective role of melanin and UV-induced DNA repair in black-and-white guinea pigs. Flat areas containing a sharp border between pigmented ...

متن کاملEffect of UV-C Irradiation on Phenolic Composition of ‘Rishbaba’ Table Grape (Vitis vinifera cv. Rishbaba)
The effect of postharvest UV-C irradiation on phenolic compounds accumulation was investigated in berries of ‘Rishbaba’ table grape (Vitis vinifera cv. Rishbaba). Grape clusters were harvested at mature stage and irradiated with UV-C using fluorescent germicidal lamp (30 W, 90 cm) with a peak emission at 254 nm for 0 (control), 5 and 10 min. UV-C treatment had significant effect on individual p...

متن کاملUV-B Exposure Affects the Biosynthesis of Microcystin in Toxic Microcystis aeruginosa Cells and Its Degradation in the Extracellular Space
Microcystins (MCs) are cyclic hepatotoxic heptapeptides produced by cyanobacteria that can be toxic to aquatic and terrestrial organisms. MC synthesis and degradation are thought to be influenced by several different physical and environmental parameters. In this study, the effects of different intensities of UV-B radiation on MC biosynthesis in Microcystis cells and on its extracellular degrad...
